Blog 3- Social Penetration Theory

In this blog I am going to go in depth in the theory of Social Penetration. This is a theory about how we get to know others and how we develop relationship with others with  mutual gratification. For an example, If I get in a conversation with a complete stranger I am going to find out the most similarities that me and that person has to decline the self-disclosure between us. I remember one time I was standing in line at Walmart and I saw this girl with a Versace handbag, We hit it off automatically because our whole conversion was about designer brands and we both had similarities in the likes of the fashion world. We continue to build a relationship but as her friend and her trusting me I continue to learn more things about her that I wouldn't think that she has been associated with. But as a true friend I was  glad she open up to me more instead of hiding things from me, It actually improve our friendship, But If she would told me those things before I probably would have ended our friendship. Another example of  Social Penetration is in the movie 21 jump street, There is a phone call that takes place between Morton and Molly. In the conversation there will be three  phases of Social Penetration shown, superficial, intimate, personal, and the core.

Here is a Video below that shows a example of  Social Penetration in the movie 21 Jump Street

Blog 2- Expectancy Violation

In this blog I am going to go in depth in Expectancy Violation communication theory.  Expectancy Violations can help or hinder communication. For example, someone with higher power over you such as your boss, you would not expect your boss to invade your personal space, curse you out or even act like they are a worker. That is not a norm, Naturally a boss or manager sets a standard of power division, For example your at a job interview, and the interviewer starts to invade your personal space and ask you personal questions? How do you react? most people do not how would they react because that is not a norm of behavior of a interviewer. Another example of  Expectancy Violation is in the movie Bad Grandpa, there is a scene were the little boy is enter into a  pageant for little girls. Not only that, but the little boy starts stripping of his clothes as if he was at a strip club and the Grandpa starts throwing money on the little boy at the pageant as if he were at a stripper. Behavior like that is not expected at an pageant, even worse that the behavior was at a little kids pageant.

Below is a example of  Expectancy Violation communication theory in the movie  Bad Grandpa
